Unconventional Toys

I’m pretty sick today with a sore throat/fever/cold/headache combo, so thought I’d tap out a blog post & go lay down while I can since J is napping. I *might* post later with pics from our day, just depends on how I am feeling and if I can get any decent ones.

I’ve been meaning to do this post for a while to share with you the goofy things that have become toy box staples for us, and to see what random things your little ones love to play with! So, if you’re reading this post and you’ve got a baby/toddler, PLEASE leave a comment (or even better, make a post with pictures!) with ideas for me (and other moms) of some unconventional (and baby safe) “toys” that you’ve discovered. :)

Our latest and greatest is empty cereal and pasta boxes and empty (& rinsed out!) milk jugs. We let Jax have a go at them before they get recycled!
Jax loves to play with the Swiffer duster! It’s a surefire way to keep him busy if I’m trying to clean!
He likes taking this cheapo brush I got at the dollar store and running it over the rug, makes a funny noise!
They gave us lots of bulb syringes at the hospital when we left the NICU, so we gave him a (NOT used) one as a chew toy.

My mom found these little plastic boxes with lids at Ikea for super cheap. I like that the lids are attached and he likes to put things in, open, close them, etc. Gladware reusable leftovers containers do the same, you just have to keep track of the lids!
This kid LOVES electronics. Namely, cell phones. So we’ve given him a couple of our old cell phones to play with and slobber on…
He loves them!
He also likes to play with my wallet. This could get messy as he gets older and figures out how to open it & take things out, but for the time being, he just holds it & shakes it!
Jax likes to play with diaper packs and the boxes they come in too!
Travis has retired from Guitar Hero (haha) so he gave Jax his guitar. He loves this thing!
Tina sent us a tin filled with goodies at Halloween time, and when it was emptied, we used it for toy storage! Jax also likes to fill and empty it, and apparently, use it as a teether. :)
If you don’t mind cleaning up a mess of wipes, give your baby the wipes box! ;) (note: we don’t do this often, but he enjoyed making a mess!)
And now, our 2 favorites!
1) Mardi Gras beads!! These are our go-to if he’s being a booger during church. :)
2) Emptied pill bottles (with the labels peeled off) and filled with anything that will make noise! We like rice, beans, and coins. He loves to shake them!

And, the “unconventional toy” that babies have loved forever, kitchen supplies. Jax loves them all…whisks, spatulas, measuring cups, you name it. :)
Your turn!

Mommies, I trust you’ll use your brains and realize you MUST supervise your little ones at all times when they’re playing with things like these that are not “made” to be toys. :)

Stalk away; we’ll see how good I am at updating:)

And to come clean, I have been reading your blog forever, like even in the xanga days:) Love hearing updates on your little man!

I loved this post! So fun!
Hannah LOVES my stainless steel mixing bowls. I put all of her leapfrog magnets in one and give her a stainless steel ladle. She “mixes” and shakes the magnets, then takes them out of one bowl and puts them in another to here the “ping” sound it makes. We also enjoy dryer balls (I just posted a pic of this the other day!), old remote controls, chip clips, junk mail, and her new favorite…all of the “negatives” from our pictures-the ones that are on a sheet of photo paper with all of the images printed very small. She loves to point to “Dada” and whoever else she finds. It keeps her busy!
We also have a gift bag we’ve filled with random “contraband” items for her to sift through (paper towel rolls, her barretts, empty plastic babyfood containers, plastic spoons, cards, etc.) In our house, we have to be creative to keep our little one busy!! :)

Andrew loves a lot of the same things. Also, I love your wallet! It’s super cute. Where is it from?

Wesley loves punching balloons and magnets. Those are his two unconventional toys that he plays with daily.

My son likes to play with the potatoes…today I found him with my wallet. Correction, I found my debit card, then I found my wallet. He also found a mum mum package in my purse (it was opened) and he took out the mum mum that was left and ate it. I pretty much let him play with anything (obviously only safe things). He loves potatoes, coasters, slippers, laundry baskets, the rug..etc.

    LOL How cute!

Jaslyn loves playing with our tupperware or in our pantry. Mostly just making a mess and tossing things. She loves playing with the wii box games, she slides them on the rug while crawling. She loves our wooden coasters as well. She loves door stoppers as well, the kind that are stuck to the wall and make this bouncy noise when you bend them.

These are all great… and I see lots of familiar “toys” from our house! Just a note about the pill bottles–you may want to consider trying baby food jars or tupperware instead of the pill bottles. I’ve been told that you don’t want to let the child think that medicine is a toy or a snack… just in case they get their hands on something dangerous. Sorry to be Debbie Downer!

Ribbon. Oh my goodness how Mady loves ribbon. She crawls around with it, puts it around her neck like a scarf, and chews on it until I am sure it will dissolve from being so soggy.

We Love to Hear From You
